What Intraoperative Sensors Revealed About the “Perfect” Knee Replacement
The data-driven approach to achieving higher functional outcomes after surgery.
Total knee arthroplasty is exceptionally reliable in terms of implant longevity and survivorship. However, patient-reported outcomes after surgery reveal a disappointing fact: up to 20% of patients are not satisfied. Patients often complain of continued pain, stiffness, or an “unnatural” feel to the joint.
For a long time, the traditional understanding of native knee kinematics supported a medial pivot pattern throughout the entire range of knee flexion. But as we look closer at the data, we realize that true natural motion is much more complex.
